CEDESA is a grass-roots campesino development center that has been organizing and promoting ecologically sustainable self-sufficiency in rural communities of northern Guanajuato for over 40 years. Founded and run by campesinos, it is a horizontal project that has as its goal an integrated concept of development - not only economic but also social and personal, promoting mutual aid and cooperative work, raising consciousness about ecological issues and instilling love for and rootedness in the earth and one's community. Located just south of Dolores Hidalgo, it is less than an hour away from San Miguel de Allende.
The CEDESA eco-tour starts off with a video that gives some historical background of the organization and its projects, followed by a discussion, then a walk around their facilities to see the eco-technologies that they promote in the rural communities with which they work - wood-saving stoves, rainwater harvesting, dry toilets, gray water recycling and drip irrigation. According to the visitors' interests, they also provide a tour of their hortalizas (vegetable gardens), composting and beekeeping areas, granja (farm animals) and parcelas (fields), and two scale-models: of the 'Sustainable Campesino Home' and of the Independence Aquifer watershed, the result of a 10-month course recently given by UNAM on water resources, along with a solar water distiller being developed to remove fluoride and arsenic from well-water. Then there is lunch from their organic gardens and fields, and after the meal, the option of visiting a rural community in which CEDESA
projects have been implemented.
We will leave San Miguel at 9 a.m. from the Fabrica Aurora parking lot and the full-day tour returns around 6 p.m., the part-day tour around 4 p.m. (if there are vehicles returning at the two different times; we will carpool and contribute gas money to the drivers). The cost for the former is $250 pesos MN, for the latter $200, and both include interpretation, translation into English and the all-you-can-eat lunch, with vegetarian option.
