El Charco ensures the conservation of a large natural area of ecological, scenic and historical importance. A botanical garden is dedicated to the study, appreciation, protection and propagation of native flora, particularly those from the desert and semi-desert regions of Mexico. An Environmental Education Center works with children to create a culture of respect for and conservation of the natural environment. El Charco's mission includes the recuperation and promotion of the traditional knowledge and practices of local communities with regard to plants, animals and other natural resources.

PEASMA aims to educate a new generation promoting awareness, love, and respect for the environment. Working with teachers to reinforce activities in a practical way, PEASMA focuses on short-term hands-on workshops and field trips that allow students to become closer to their natural surroundings and to see the immediate impact of their actions.

PEASMA has joined with Reforestamos México to bring the Crea Bosques (Create Forests) program to 30 elementary schools in San Miguel de Allende. Nurseries or green houses set up at the schools are used to produce trees for reforesting natural areas.

The Greening of San Miguel - Tree Fund

The Tree Fund works with residents to plant entire streets in colonias that are unable to organize and finance tree planting on their own. These trees increase moisture, cut down on dust and airborne bacteria, and beautify the streets.
